Way off Plan Wednesday

Posted on May 27, 2008 12:02 by Marianne

Well, the craziness of the holiday week kept right on coming.  Unusually for us, we ate away from home (it's a challenge with food allergies), took picnics to the pool,  and even ate sandwiches one night.  I never got to the grocery store.  So, today I went down to the freezer to see what I could use.

There was a pork roast that would not thaw in time, a lot of ice cream, and some steaks that were bought-off plan but on-sale and ready to be used.  So I used the search feature and came up with Marinated New York Strip Steaks.  No matter what kind of steaks these are, that's what I'm doing with them.  I have some boil-in-the-bag brown rice in the pantry (the only brown rice I can get the kids to eat), some peaches leftover from lunch, and a few straggler carrots and zucchini to steam.   Sounds like a meal my family will like.

This got me to wondering just how long I can go without grocery shopping?  Sure, I might have to pick up some bread and fresh fruits and vegetables, but what a challenge!  I'm going to try to go the whole week using what we already have.   The ultimate goal, besides using up all the food before it goes bad, is to have an empty freezer to defrost and an empty pantry to reconfigure.

What can you make out of what you already have?
